Ryan announced his return to professional competition earlier this year after a hiatus living and surfing in mainland Mexico at world class breaks like Puerto Escondido.

Helm blew-up at the inaugural WQS 3 Star Globe Sebastian Inlet Pro with a solid 5th place, semi-final finish in January, whilst announcing his intentions to qualify for the 2006 WCT Tour. His top finish at the ASP's first event of the 2005 season after being absent from recent U.S. tournaments, turned quite a few heads and prompted former World Champion Peter (PT) Townend to comment "Who is that Darkhorse?".

Ryan is presently preparing for the 6 Star Honda US Open of Surfing, Presented by O'Neill; July 25-31 in California (the world's largest professional surfing event), after which he will fly to Japan to compete in the next 6 Star World Qualifying event before heading to France where the WQS Tour will resume.

Ryan is also in good company as one of only a handful of top surfers featured on former Rusty Shaper, Bill Johnson's 'A List' Surf Team that includes 2001 World Champion CJ Hobgood, and top WQS Contender Gabe Kling.
