HELM BROTHERS STIRRING UP THE SURF (AND TURF)

The Brother's Helm –  Surfboards, Fish... and Soccer Balls

Chivas USA selects Florida Atlantic forward Drew Helm (Pro Surfer, Ryan Helm's younger brother) with the first choice in the recent MLS supplemental draft. Helm scored two goals in four games for Florida Atlantic in 2005 after transferring from South Florida, where had three goals and seven assists in 19 games in the 2003 and 2004 seasons.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE… Los Angeles, CA

While Ryan Helm awaits to surf his 3rd Round Heat at the 4 Star Monster Energy Pipeline Pro in Hawaii, he has received word that his younger brother Drew has just been drafted by the Los Angeles based "Chivas USA" as the first choice in the recent MLS supplemental draft. As Ryan glances out over the building surf, the up and coming professional surfer can't hide his exuberance by the appearance of a revealing ear-to-ear grin. The proud older brother quickly phones his manager with the news "Drew Just got drafted by the Chivas"! Not only is the young, L.A. based “Chivas USA” fast gaining momentum as a winning franchise in the US based MLS, but the team is Mexican owned with a heritage that traces straight back to Guadalajara Mexico. Incidentally, Guadalajara is the hometown of Ryan's beautiful wife - Paola.

While Ryan is busy pursuing his dream of qualifying on the elite WCT Surfing Tour, younger brother Drew has chosen a different, more terrestrial path. Forward, Drew Helm was the first player to go in the (MLS) supplemental draft, chosen by Chivas USA. Helm missed most of the last two collegiate seasons because of injuries, playing only five games with South Florida in 2004, recording three assists, and then, after transferring, four matches with Florida Atlantic last season, scoring two goals. Playing 14 games for USF in 2003, he had three goals and four assists. Helm is "an individual who has the ability to make heads turn," FAU coach Kos Donev said. Ron Waxman, Drew’s NY based Agent sums it up..."We are very excited about the opportunity for Drew to work with one of the best coaches in the league and help build a winning tradition for this organization that will last for many years to come".

To say Ryan and Drew Helm come from an athletically inclined family is well, an understatement. Their Mother (Kim) plays tournament level tennis, their father (Jim) is an accomplished surfer and tennis player who starts out every morning with a rigorous yoga routine and finishes off his day with either a run on the beach or a surf (if the waves are up). The father, son trio are also renowned "Free Divers" (Spear Fishing without the aid of oxygen). The family hails from the South Florida coastal community of Jupiter Beach, just North of the Fort Lauderdale/Miami area. Some of the best Free Diving in North America is found just offshore in the Bahamas.

Keeping his eyes on the ball (or board as the case may be), Ryan Helm has launched his 2006 WCT Qualifying campaign with a strong Quarter Final finish in the Globe SI Pro and is waiting to see what Pipeline dishes out at the Monster Energy Pro in Hawaii this week. Observers have drawn favorable comparisons to sport icons like Kelly Slater (Surfing) and David Beckham (Soccer); but both brothers tend to shrug off the “hype” in favor of focusing on achieving their goals and making their own names in sport.

There are a number of famous siblings in the world of sport whose names have been etched in our minds and hearts; from Tennis and Football to surfing. Names like Williams, Barber, Manning, Lopez, Irons and Hobgood. For those paying attention, it would be advisable to add the brothers Helm to this list. "I wouldn't mind traveling around from Pro Surf Contests to Pro Soccer Tournaments over the next several years”, said their father, Jim (Helm) a successful South Florida Real Estate Developer. Definitely something to look forward to. Surfing and Soccer - who would have ever thought…
